Short version
Displace runs locally and does not track how you use your Mac. Data is sent only for trials, license activation and checks, app updates, payment and email flows, feedback you choose to send, and basic website traffic measurement. Those requests carry only what the step needs, usually technical basics like your app version, Mac model, and a hashed device ID. Your layouts, settings, files, and logs stay on your Mac unless you include them in a bug report. Displace does not run in-app analytics, sell data, or use your data for advertising or marketing lists.
Trial and license activation
Starting a trial does not require an email address. For a trial, the app sends a hashed device identifier and basic app and device information to run one trial per Mac and prevent abuse.
For a paid license, your purchase email is linked to your license, along with a hashed device identifier and basic device information for each Mac you activate. This tracks the up-to-5 Macs on your license, so activating a 6th can automatically deactivate the one least recently checked in. While licensed, the app periodically sends license and device information to its servers to make sure the license is still active.
If a Pro license is refunded, revoked, or no longer valid, this check turns the Pro features back off on that Mac. The app keeps working on the free tier, and you can still change settings, buy, activate, or contact support.
Service providers
A few providers receive data only when needed for their part of the service:
- Paddle, the payment merchant of record, processes checkout, payment details, tax, invoices, and receipts. Displace never sees or stores your full card details.
- A transactional email provider delivers license keys, purchase confirmations, license notices, and support replies. Displace does not send newsletters unless you ask.
- Cloudflare Turnstile protects the contact form from spam and automated abuse. It verifies you are human without reading personal files or tracking your browsing history.
App updates
The app checks for updates using Sparkle, an open-source macOS update framework. The request includes your app version, and the app downloads the update file when one is available.
Bug reports and feedback
Feedback is sent only when you click Send. By default, bug reports include your message, app and macOS version, license state, recent app logs, and diagnostics about the app and your displays; you can turn diagnostics off before sending. The app redacts obvious sensitive values such as email addresses, activation tokens, user paths, and display identifiers.
Feature requests, questions, and general feedback include basic app and device information to prevent abuse, but not extended diagnostics unless you attach them. If you include your email, it is used only to reply about that report or notify you about a related fix. The app does not send crash reports; macOS may collect crashes through Apple's own reporter, controlled by your macOS Privacy settings.
Website and cookies
The website uses privacy-first, cookieless analytics to measure aggregate traffic such as page views and referrers. It sets no cookies, does not identify individual visitors, and runs no advertising or cross-site tracking. Pages with the buy button load Paddle's checkout script, which may use cookies or browser storage to open checkout and prevent fraud.
If you use the contact form, the name, email, and message you enter are used only to read and reply to you.
Your rights and retention
License records are kept while needed for licensing, support, fraud prevention, accounting, and legal compliance. Bug reports are kept only as long as needed to investigate and improve the app. You can ask to access, correct, or delete the data covered by this policy, and you can complain to your local data protection authority. Email [email protected]. For payment data controlled by Paddle, use Paddle's privacy and order-support channels.
Changes
This policy may be updated as the app evolves. The date above reflects the latest version.
